Ambulance Mental Health Response
Author: Terry SimpsonOVERVIEW
“Try to imagine if you or a loved one were experiencing a mental health crisis. If feeling frightened, lonely, isolated, and distressed how would you like to be treated? This workbook produced and peer reviewed in partnership with a number of subject matter experts is a really helpful foundation to improving confidence around mental health and providing empathy… I wrote this book as I am passionate about improving mental health awareness and response in the ambulance sector.”
Terry Simpson, Author
By 2030, it is projected that mental health issues will be the leading cause of mortality and morbidity globally (World Health Organization, 2011).
With cases of mental health illness on the rise, it is increasingly crucial that ambulance clinicians and paramedics feel empowered in their ability to assess and manage a variety of conditions. This resource provides the foundation of knowledge you need to navigate often-fraught situations with sensitivity and confidence.
Encouraging an interactive approach, critical thinking, and practical application to reinforce your learning, this guide includes and covers:
- A range of mental health presentations (including post-traumatic stress disorder, psychosis, and addiction)
- Patients with complex needs (learning disabilities, autism spectrum disorder, dementia)
- Guidance on risk assessment and safety
- The nuances of the legal framework surrounding mental health and mental capacity
- Nine case studies, eight reflective exercises, seven workbook activities and further clinical tips.
ENDORSEMENTS
This is a refreshingly straightforward book, covering a wide range of topics, with valuable practical advice and tips relevant to all those that provide emergency ambulance care. Acceptance and compassion, for our patients and for ourselves, are crucially the core and salient messages throughout. The structure of the book with short sections and tasks designed to consolidate learning enables the reader to progress with ease and at their own pace. A very useful learning tool on this subject.
