Volume 9, Issue 12: DrowningAuthors: Paul Savage, Christoph Schroth
Drowning – immersing yourself in the evidence
It is one of the hottest July days and you have barely had a chance to hydrate and have a snack due to the volume of calls when you are dispatched to Bournemouth Pier “drowning in progress; RNLI in attendance”. En route, you start thinking through the guidelines, is your knowledge of them up-to-date?
Drowning claimed 585 lives in the UK in 2018. This article examines how drowning occurs, including the pathophysiology and a detailed description of the four stages of immersion.
After reading this issue you should have an understanding of the assessment and treatment considerations at different stages of immersion. This will enable a faster and more accurate response where outcomes for the patient are time-critical.
