Volume 9, Issue 11: Ectopic Pregnancy
Author: Melinda (Dolly) McPhersonOVERVIEW
Ectopic Pregnancy
A call comes through – “36 year old female – diarrhoea” (and in a public place no less) surely this patient should just see their GP, not call an ambulance! On arrival the patient is in pain but improves with paracetamol – should you discharge her with viral gastroenteritis worsening advice or have you missed something?
CPD Benefit
There is a proportionally high mortality rate among patients presenting with ectopic pregnancy. NICE states that two-thirds of the mortality rate for ectopic pregnancy can be attributed to sub-standard care. Early and rapid intervention is vital. This article describes the anatomy and physiology of an ectopic pregnancy and discusses causes and common risk factors for the condition. There is also guidance on assessment and management, including differential diagnosis and possible complications, to enable you optimise care for the patient.
