As a paramedic you cannot accurately diagnose sepsis and any subsequent treatment/management you initiate is based on a high index of suspicion of this critical condition. Sepsis is responsible for around 150,000 hospital admissions in the UK per year with a very high mortality of around 30%. Each year around 44,000 people die as a result of sepsis in the UK alone.
