Author: Dwain LongleyOVERVIEW
Major Incident Response – bringing order out of chaos
It’s 3am, it’s raining and you are working on the rapid response vehicle, your radio goes off just as you’re about to make yourself a drink: ‘RTC on the motorway…’ a medium sized coach is involved along with a people carrier. When you arrive you find yourself first on scene for the ambulance service – what do you need to do?
CPD Benefit
The Cabinet office (July 2016) defined a major incident as: ‘An event or situation, with a range of serious consequences, which requires special arrangements to be implemented by one or more emergency responder agencies’. Should find yourself first on scene you will need to remember that while help is often on its way to support you, you are the one who is there, in uniform, and people will be expecting you to take action.
The action of the first resources at the scene of an incident directly impacts on those involved and on how smoothly the incident progresses. This issue provides guidance on how best to manage a major incident with information on efficient communication, organising resources and triaging patients to help you to make difficult decisions that can have life-changing effects on multiple patients, their families and friends.
