Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a long-term autoimmune disease of the central nervous system, over 130,000 people in the UK are currently diagnosed with MS. This article outlines the pathophysiology and signs and symptoms of MS with discussion of the different types of MS that patients may be diagnosed with and treatment that they may be receiving. There is guidance on how pre-hospital clinicians can best assess and manage people living with long-term conditions such as MS with an emphasis on listening to the patient and shared decision making to avoid cognitive bias and ensure that these patients receive the best possible care.
